Hongkong Travelguide

On my way to Australia, I thought it would be a great chance to explore the amazing city Hongkong. And I can tell you that it definitily paid off.  Hongkong offers so much variety.
Although the population is about 7.5 Million people in this giant city, it can easily happen that you’re in a park sitting on a bench only by yourself. In a way it’s a really big city with all these giant skyscrapers but all of a sudden the city stoppps and nature with its beautiful green hills begin.

What to do/see in Hongkong?

Causaway Bay

Causaway bay is all about SHOPPING. You can find there not only gigantic shopping malls but also local retailers.

Victoria Peak

I think one of the most famous things do in Hongkong is to go to this really cool observation deck called Victoria Peak. You will have a really great view over the city.
I recommed going there during weekdays because it can be really busy on weekends.
There are several ways of getting to the Peak. Either by Taxi, Bus or just walking but you can also get there with this old and charming Peak Tram. Despite it being one of the most expensive ways to get there, I can totally recommend it.
Another thing I can highly recommend is buying these tickets in advance at Klook. I also did it the first time and it totally paid off. I didn’t only save about 25% of the ticketprice but I also avoided the long queue.

Lantau

Tian Tan Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery

The easiest and most beautiful way to get to Lantau is taking the MTR to Tung Chung and then with the cable car directly to the Buddha. It’s not only the easiest but also the way with the greatest view. Make sure to either buy the tickets in advance or go really early in the morning because the queue can be massive. If there is no other option but visiting the Buddha on weekends another way to get there is by bus  (no. 23  to Bus Ngong Ping) from Tung Chung.

Tai O

When you are visiting the Tian Tan Buddha and the monastery, it’s really nice to see the little fishing village Tai O too.  Just take the bus no. 21 from Ngong Ping village (where the Buddha and the monastery is) to Tai O and explore this little village.
To get back to the Tung Chung MTR station you have to take the bus no. 11.

Where to eat?

One of the most important things to know: Where to get good food!

I can highly recommend to you the area SOHO. There you can not only find typical chinese but also other really nice restaurants from all over the world.

If you’re more into street food then the area around Temple Street in Kowloon is the best place for you! There you can find also a great nightmarket and all kinds of chinese food.

A restaurant I have been to and really recommend is „Shanghai Lao Lao“. There you won’t only find the famous Dim Sum but also lots of other goodies. Compared to other restaurants in Hongkong this one is totally well-priced. On top of the really nice interior and the atmosphere in the restaurant, I have to say that the staff is totally friendly too and you even get green tea for free.

Tips and Tricks

Symphony of lights

Every evening at 20:00 you can see a really nice light show accompanied with music. Best place to watch it is from the Avenue of Stars.

Star Ferry

To get from Kowloon to Hongkong Central or vice versa you can either take the MTR or you can go by ferry. I can highly recommend going by ferry not only because it’s cheaper but also because I think it’s so nice crossing the water with an old ferry.

Octopus Card

When you’re going to visit Hongkong make sure you get an Octopus Card. It will make your life so much easier. You can not only buy your MTR and Star Ferry tickets with it really quickly but also pay in supermarkets, fast food restaurants and vending machines with it.

Airport Express

One of the fastest and for me also one of the most comforting ways to get from the airport into the city center is with the Airport Express.
Just buy your ticket at Klook and you will get the best price. And also there is no need to have a physical ticket, just enter the gate with the QR code on your voucher. Also, this open dated ticket is valid for 90 days from the date of purchase.
